Club day - Hurling game 1980s v 1990s – Sunday 9th May. Following the great success of La na gClub last year, a similar event is being planned again this year - on Sunday 9th May in Healy Park. Last year a number of you thoroughly enjoyed the hurling game between ex players (see picture attached) and I would like to build on that for the forthcoming event. While the day is about celebrating the club, with special football and hurling activities being organised for our youth and family members, a big effort is also being made at adult level to organise a game between past and current players. At football level an attempt is being made to organise a game between last year's highly successful minor football team which won the Ulster Club Championship and the 1983 minor football team which was the last Omagh side to win the Tyrone championship. Of course, 1983 was the year Omagh won the double in minor football and hurling championships with many players on both teams. At hurling level, we have also many opportunities to celebrate our history. 30 years ago this year (on 14th May to be precise), we entered an U-16 hurling team for the first time after many years of no hurling in Omagh. Our 1981 U16 team was the first team to win a title for Omagh since 1973, in 1983 Omagh won its first ever minor hurling championship, in 1988 we contested our first and only senior hurling championship final since 1973 and in 1995 we won the Tyrone and Ulster Minor Shield Championship - the last ever hurling title to come to the club. In 2002 we competed in hurling for the last time. On the day, everything will kick off with a Parade of all players and members and their families from Omagh Bus Depot to Healy Park commencing at 10.30am. An Open-air Mass will follow at 11am and a full day of activities will run from 1pm-6pm, including Rounders, Family picnics, minir football and hurling games for boys and girls, Poc Fada, Long Kick, Penalty Kick and a children’s Treasure Hunt around Healy Park. The 1980s and 1990s were glorious times for Omagh hurling and to celebrate those times I am hoping to organise a "fun" senior hurling game between title winning teams from those two decades - the 1980s v 1990s. Make sure to bring the whole family. I have listed below most of the league and championship winning teams from those years. If you are listed below, please keep free Sunday 9th May for this special game. Anyone who played hurling at any time is most welcome to come along. Please pass this email on to anyone who you think might be interested even if they never played with us in the past. Everyone is welcome to try their hand. Last year Joe McMahon played hurling in the club day. This will be a great attempt to have a reunion of players and it will be a light-hearted game where craic and memories will be the priority. Please Let me know if you are interested by emailing me or call me at any time on 07725351643 asap.
