Senior Ladies Claim First Championship Win
LADIES FOOTBALL

TYRONE JUNIOR FOOTBALL FINAL

Omagh 3-10

Aghyaran 1-3

Omagh St Endas ladies ended a 19 year wait on Sunday to finally annex an adult county title when they systematically took apart a fancied Aghyaran to seal the Junior football championship title with a 3-10 to 1-3 score line at sunny Ballinamullan in turn collecting the Brenda Logue memorial cup.

Going into the game with the real prospect of relegation to the bottom rung of Tyrone ladies football hanging over them and a heavy loss in the league to John Penrose’s side still fresh in their minds, Omagh were very much the underdogs.

A powerhouse display though from St Endas saw them turn over Agyharan with 13 points to spare, also having the luxury of hitting 15 wides in a one sided county decider.

Few gave Omagh a chance going into Sundays final though, talisman forward Hayley Ballard ruled out with a knee injury and there were positional switches all over the park as they appeared in their second successive final, St Davogs too had last minute switches Phenah O’Neill ruled out with Roisin Moss introduced at centre field.

Omagh got off to a storming start and led 1-4 to no score by half time, Grainne McGale finishing to the net crisply after Terri McCullagh intercepted a Logue pass. In the first ten minutes Omagh hit six wides as Aghyaran struggled to breach the Omagh defence with Christiane Hunter, Orla Kelly and Clodagh Mullan impressive on the half back line.

McCullagh added another 0-2 as Omagh squandered goal chances, Moynagh and McGale going close, Cathy Gallen and Kellie Meehan helping to quell the danger. It was one way traffic though with McGale and McCullagh completing the rout with further first half points, worryingly though the team had racked up some twelve wides, all score able chances.

St Davogs had struggled in that first half, they changed the midfield on several occasions while up front they failed to make any inroads.

A bright start was needed by Aghyraran but it didn’t materialise as Omagh rattled the net again within three minutes of the restart, Terri McCullagh with a quick free found Kelly O Sullivan who dinked a delightful effort over goalkeeper Emma Lynch, sadly Lynch was injured in a valiant attempt to save the shot and had to be replaced. McCullagh latched on another point and that made it 2-5 to no score. Lucy Meehans pointed free finally raised the white flag for Aghyaran on 11 minutes and despite Carol Ann Byrnes second point for St Davogs minutes later Omagh just piled on the agony, Cara McCrossan, Louise Moynagh and Terri McCullagh with points .

Omagh keeper Colleen McCullagh was beaten on 25 minutes with a Meehan quick free finding the net and the number eight also hit a late point. McCullagh not at fault for the goal and normal service was resumed when McCullagh and Charmaine Gormley combined to clear to Hunter who found an in rushing Moynagh who kept her cool to beat replacement keeper Adele Smith. Midfielder Colleen McCullagh and Terri McCullagh rounded off the scoring for Omagh , Terri McCullagh finishing the day with 0-6 of her sides tally.

Victory sealed for St Endas, a stunning display of powerful football at its best, from goalkeeper McCullagh, captain Emma Nugent, young Caoimhe McGovern, Hunter, Kelly and Mullan, the veteran Nicola McCrossan, Emma Collins, Mc Gale and O Sullivan this was Omagh at their very best. Disappointment for Aghyaran but no-one could have lived with Omagh on that form.

Next up for them a first foray into the Ulster club championship and a clash in October against Armagh junior champions Granemore who beat Clann Eirann by a point in a low scoring Armagh final at the weekend.
